An Introduction to Numerical Analysis
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (January, 1989)
Author: Kendall E. Atkinson
Average review score:

Worst Math Book I've ever had to use
As a math major here at the University of Michigan I must say that this is the worst Math book I have ever had to use in a class. The book is full of archaic proofs and lots of general solutions, but no practical examples on how these solutions could be used. This book is basically just a big group of equations, without any explanation as to how or why you would want to use any of them. Theres lots of numerical analysis books out there, you could do better than buying this potential paper-weight.

thorough, but thoroughly unreadable
This is a standard textbook by a leading authority. There is little hand-waiving here. However, this is hardly a book to learn by.

The typesetting could have been a bit better. I wish the proofs had been set off from the examples and the text a little more. There is also too much referencing to earlier equations. Rather than referring me over and over to equatin (6.2.1), just re-write the equation.

Also, this book is starting to show its age. It is now 11 years old, so its bibliography is a bit outdated, as are references to computer programs.

My most severe criticism of this book is that it is sorely lacking in explanations. There is little intuition provided here. Definately not an undergrad book. A much better text to learn from--but not as useful as a reference as this book is--is Burden and Faires. B&F make lots of use of pseudo-code and I applaud them for it. It helps detangle some of the math.

Excellent introduction to numerical analysis
Out of some 7 or 8 numerical analysis texts from which I have learned or taught, this is easily the best. Its organization is standard, its exposition is excellent, it is comprehensive in its coverage of introductory topics, it has a very good bibliography, and its problems are very good. It is a good introduction for graduate students; it is a little advanced for most undergraduates, though strong undergraduates would benefit from its use. No computer coding is supplied though coding from the book's explanations is straightforward.

Professional Java Mobile Programming
Published in Paperback by Wrox Press Inc (July, 2001)
Authors: Ronald Ashri, Steve Atkinson, Rob Machin, Martin Graf, Marten Haglend, Nadia Nashi, Richard Taylor, Danny Ayers, Bill Ray, and Bill Ray
Average review score:

What a Lousy Book!!!
This is the worst book I have read so far. There are so many errors in the book! And all descriptions about J2ME are vague. It's really a pity that I spent my money on this useless book.
Don't buy this book!!!

Don't expect too much on this book
If you are a developer and eager to find resource on Java Mobile development, this book must disappoint you. This book just give you a general java mobile concept. May be this technology is too green so that all topics are not in depth to discuss with very limited examples.

The worse of this book is some examples just show the source code only with no any demonstration of the program running or even the complied result and that made people hard to understand what the source code mean.

If you see the content that this book cover MIDP for Palm. Don't believe this, this book is only cover the early stage of java KVM in Palm but not included the current Sun MIDP for Palm OS

Great coverage and good case studies
I found this book very useful for getting to grips with the wide range of technologies available for Java platform on mobile devices. It's strong point is the breadth of subjects covered and not the depth. However, if like me, you prefer to get on to a quick start and the get deeper into the subject on a "as needed" basis this book will provide it. It got me up to date and able to continue on my own from the first three chapters.
If you are already an experienced J2ME developer then the case studies will show how others have tackled some J2ME problems. If you are a beginner then you will get a complete treatment of the range of technologies.

Billy Budd
Published in Paperback by Hill & Wang Pub (June, 1962)
Authors: Robert Chapman, Lo Lus O. Coxe, Brooks Atkinson, and Louis O. Coxe
Average review score:

say it, don't spray it
Show, don't tell. That's what I learned in my undergraduate fiction writing class. And I'm sure that Melville learned it, too. Coxe and Chapman weren't as attentive, I'm afraid.

The play spells out the "clunky"--read: metaphysical--conflicts in the plot, and even dramatizes secret meeting between Billy and Vere. The main thrust of the story is that we don't get to see that! The only thing it moved was my bowels. I wonder why it hasn't been performed in 30 years...

For and excellent dramatic adaptation, see Britten's opera. It at least preserves the mystery and the psychology of Melville's masterpiece.

This book was a mistake!
I read this book as a summer assignment for my English Honors class. I could not believe how terrible it was! I could not even follow it when I read it out loud. The only thing that got me through it was Cliffs Notes. Sure this book has a lot of good morals (that I only discovered through Cliffs Notes) but overall, it was wretched!

A Masterpiece of Adaptation
Rarely does the world of fiction translate to theatre as cleanly and powerfully as this. Poet Louis Coxe and Robert Chapman have done a masterful job of bringing Herman Melville's somewhat clunky morality tale to life in this play. A must read for anyone who enjoys Melville or good, moving theatre.

NetObjects Fusion 2.0 : Effective Web Design in 3 Days
Published in Paperback by International Thomson Publishing (August, 1997)
Authors: Lee Taylor, Jennifer Atkinson, and Dana Chisnell
Average review score:

This book is really an advertisement
Although it had some good design tips, this book did not help me design a website in three days. The biggest flaw in the book was that the authors ignored most of the flaws in the software, and spent lots of time praising it. As I designed my test site with this poorly designed software, I experienced mostly unexpected results, layout choices were not saved on every page like they were supposed to be, and graphics occasionally disappeared from my pages. I find it hard to believe that the authors never experienced anything similar.

The Rough Guide to Southeast Asia (Southeast Asia (Rough Guides))
Published in Paperback by Rough Guides (11 January, 2001)
Authors: Jeremy Atiyah, Rough Guides, and David Atkinson
Average review score:

Stick with Lonely Planet!
I recently spent the month in Southeast Asia. I thought I could save time, money, and space by buying just one guidebook for the region. So I bought the Rough Guide to Southeast Asia. A BIG MISTAKE! I ended up throwing the book out in Bangkok and switching to bootleg Lonely Planets for sale all over Southeast Asia for about [price]!

I had heard good things about the Rough Guide, but personally found the book not that usefull at all.

I do not recommend buying this book. LP is the way to go!

Social Order and the General Theory of Strategy
Published in Paperback by Routledge Kegan & Paul (July, 1982)
Author: Alexander Atkinson
Average review score:

A true vision of war
Atkinson wrote this book more than twenty years ago, and I have had my copy since the early 1980s. I recently rediscovered my battered copy and re-read it, now, of course twenty years older, and in the context of Gulf War Two.

I feel that all all those who engage in a war riddled with absurdities and wild misapprehensions should strive to find a copy of this book and learn from what Atkinson has to say about protracted war. They would gain much from his 'cold look at where politically motivated violence seemes more and more headed'.

Those who are given to talking glibly about a long conflict should understand from his analysis of the social content of guerrilla war that it can stretch over generations. And they should note that no Western nation has ever ultimately succeeded in overcoming such an enemy permanently and without qualification.

This book is not an easy read, for the ideas with he works are complex and often disturbing. But this is a forgotten classic, and I hope some publisher will have the good sense to revive it.

Chow-Chows (Barron's Pet Owner's Manual)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (November, 1988)
Author: James Atkinson
Average review score:

This book was a bit of a disappointment ...
Some of the pictures were nice ... but the information seemed quite generic and not specific to the chow chow at all. if one wants to learn more about chow chows, read another book!

I loved the pictures
Pictures were great and there is some useful info, but over all
I was a bit disappointed.

Just a generic dog book
Although it has some useful information for new dog owners this is just a generic dog book. It has very little specific to Chow Chows. It is mostly information that could apply to any breed. If you want to learn about Chow Chows pick another book.

Conquering Rheumatoid Arthritis: An Illustrated Guide to Understanding the Treatment and Control of Rheumatoid Arthritis
Published in Paperback by BC Decker (March, 1997)
Authors: William Md Bensen, Wynn, Md Benson, Martin Atkinson, and Wynn Bensen
Average review score:

recommends pyramid treatment-out of date
This textbook still talks about using nsaids for early treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Treating in this manner delays definitive treatment and results in more long-term pain and further joint damage. NSAIDS only cover up the pain and slightly decrease the inflammation, It is necessary to start disease-modifying drugs early in order to have the best chance of obtaining and maintaining full remission. Otherwise the joint damage will just continue.

Low Speed Automobile Accidents: Accident Reconstruction and Occupant Kinematics, Dynamics, and Biomechanics
Published in Hardcover by Lawyers & Judges Publishing Company (August, 1999)
Authors: Alan J. Watts, Dale R. Atkinson, and Corey J. Hennessy
Average review score:

Could have been a lot better. Much left out about subject.
A basic physics approach to low speed impact of automobiles. Author uses a strange definition of coefficient of restitution which is negative instead of positive. Little experimental data is offerred and there is no review of the current low speed impact volunteer data which is the current basis for much opinion. The free video is some graphic computer artist's crude representation of a rear end collision and depicts unrealistic vehicle, seat and occupant kinematics. However, for a rank beginner you will be exposed to the basic physics of this type of collision. For a followup you will need to read various SAE papers to really understand the practical realities of the relationship between such a collision and the outcomes.
